Columnar basalt rock walls in the Alcantara Gorges canyon
Alcantara Gorges

A day trip to the Alcantara Gorges

About a 40-minute drive from Pedara, the Alcantara river has carved out one of Sicily’s most unusual landscapes: a dark basalt-rock canyon, with walls that in places rise over 25 metres, and water that stays cold even in high summer. For guests staying at Magma 610, it’s one of the easiest day trips to organise — just a few hours for the drive, the visit and the return.

How the gorges were formed

The Alcantara Gorges are the result of an encounter between fire and water. Thousands of years ago, a lava flow from Etna reached the course of the Alcantara river; the sudden contact between the molten lava and the water caused the rock to cool rapidly, fracturing into geometric columnar shapes, almost like stone organ pipes. Over the following millennia, the river kept carving between these basalt columns, sculpting the canyon seen today.

The result is a landscape that looks almost artificial, with evenly layered walls in colours ranging from dark grey to black, often covered in moss and ferns in the damper spots.

How to get there and how long the visit takes

The Alcantara River Park has a main entrance near Motta Camastra, with parking, a ticket office and lifts/stairs down to river level. There are also more informal, free access points further upstream or downstream, less equipped but just as striking for those who prefer a more natural experience.

For the “classic” visit — descent, a walk along the first stretch of the canyon and, optionally, wading in — two to three hours are usually enough, including tickets and travel time. Those wanting to venture further upstream, where the canyon narrows and the scenery gets wilder, can easily fill a whole half-day.

What to do on site

The simplest way to visit the gorges is to walk the equipped walkways and paths near the main entrance, which let you admire the basalt walls up close without getting wet. Those wanting a deeper experience can rent high rubber boots (available near the entrance) and wade into the riverbed to walk up the canyon in the shallower stretches.

In the warmer months, plenty of visitors dive straight into the natural pools: the water stays cold all year round, thanks to its high-altitude source, but on the hottest summer days it’s exactly that temperature contrast that makes the experience memorable.

Practical tips

A change of clothes is practically essential if you plan to enter the water or even get too close to the pools — splashes are frequent. Water shoes or hiking boots with good grip are preferable to sandals: the river rocks are smooth and can be slippery.

The best time to visit runs from May to September, when temperatures make the cold water enjoyable; in the colder months the canyon is still worth visiting and fascinating to explore on dry land, but wading in isn’t recommended without proper gear (wetsuits, sometimes available for rent).

It’s worth arriving in the early morning, especially in high season: on summer weekends the main car park can fill up quickly, and the walkways get crowded by mid-morning.

From Magma 610, a trip to the Alcantara Gorges pairs well with a stop in Taormina, just a few kilometres along the same route: two different destinations in one day, without doubling back halfway. Book your stay and plan the trip at your own pace, knowing you have a convenient base to start from.
