What to see in Taormina
Taormina is one of Sicily's most famous destinations: the Greek Theatre, with its breathtaking view of Etna and the sea, is probably the island's most photographed monument. The old town, with Corso Umberto, Piazza IX Aprile and its views over the gulf, can be explored on foot in a few hours, among shops, panoramic terraces and historic buildings.
Nearby, the coves of Isola Bella — a small island connected to the mainland by a sandbar — are one of the symbolic images of Sicily's Ionian coast and an almost obligatory stop for anyone visiting Taormina.
How to reach Taormina from Etna
From Pedara, on Etna's south side, Taormina is about a 30-minute drive away, along a route that descends toward the Ionian coast through some of the area's most striking scenery. You can also plan the visit using public transport, though a car remains the most convenient way to manage timing and stops along the way.
When to visit Taormina
In summer we recommend arriving early to find parking more easily and avoid the midday heat, especially if you also plan to visit Isola Bella. In spring and autumn, Taormina offers milder weather and fewer crowds, ideal for taking your time at the old town and the Greek Theatre.
If your day also includes a beach stop, the beaches of Mazzarò and Isola Bella are reachable by cable car directly from the centre of Taormina, a convenient alternative for those who don't want to look for parking twice in one day.
