A weekend on Etna's south side: a 2-day itinerary

Planning an effective weekend on Etna’s south side is easier than it sounds, especially starting from a convenient base like Magma 610: two days are enough to alternate between nature, the local area and village life, without having to change accommodation every night. Here’s a practical itinerary for anyone with a weekend to spare who wants to make the most of it.

Day 1: morning

The first morning is the ideal time to dedicate to Etna, when the light is best and the viewpoints are less crowded. From Pedara, the Silvestri Craters are about 30-40 minutes away by car: it’s worth setting off early, around 9:00, to find parking easily and enjoy the loop trails at a relaxed pace before the midday tour groups arrive. Two to three hours are enough for an unhurried visit among extinct volcanic cones and historic lava flows.

Day 1: afternoon and evening

Back in Pedara in the early afternoon, the rest of the day is suited to a slower pace: a light lunch, some rest, and then a stroll through the village centre towards evening. The main square, just 300 metres from Magma 610, is the perfect spot for an aperitif and to soak up the authentic local atmosphere before dinner. The village has no shortage of trattorias and pizzerias to round off the day with Sicilian cooking, all within walking distance.

Day 2

The second day offers a choice between two different directions, depending on your interests: a winery on the south side for a tasting, or a different viewpoint from the one visited the day before.

Those choosing the winery can set off around 10:30-11:00, with a visit and tasting that usually lasts between two and three hours, lunch included in some cases. Those who’d rather see the volcano from another angle can head to Piano Provenzana, on the north side, leaving by 9:30 to allow time to enjoy its wooded, quieter atmosphere compared with the Silvestri Craters, before heading back in the early afternoon.

Either way, it’s worth returning to Pedara by late afternoon, leaving time for one last stroll through the centre or to relax in the courtyard before departing.

Practical tips for planning the weekend

Some activities, such as winery tastings or guided Etna tours, have limited availability at weekends: booking a few days ahead avoids finding everything sold out, especially between spring and autumn. It’s also worth booking Saturday dinner in advance if travelling in high season.

As for clothing, it’s best to dress in layers: temperatures at altitude on Etna can be noticeably lower than in Pedara, even in high summer. Comfortable shoes are useful for both days, along with a good-sized water bottle for the excursions.

Book your apartment at Magma 610 and plan your weekend on Etna’s south side: two days are enough to take home a full taste of the local area.
